Reseda Charter HS is home to a growing SAS/GATE student population.  Students accepted into our SAS program are scheduled into Honors level College-Prep courses meeting the UC/CSU university requirements for admission.  Our SAS students move together as a grade level cohort enrolling in A-G classes taught by highly qualified teachers.  In addition, our SAS students visit at least one college campus each school year.  To view our recent field trips to Pepperdine University, UCLA and CSU Fullerton, click on the Photo Album link on the right side column.  GATE students may apply for open enrollment to Reseda Charter HS SAS admission or join another program offered.

The School for Advanced Studies (SAS) is an option designed to support and expand Gifted/Talented Programs in schools throughout the District. The School for Advanced Studies Demonstration Sites provide high-level academic programs to serve the educational needs of gifted and high achieving learners.
The Advanced Studies Program has been implemented to meet the needs of gifted and talented students throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District. It establishes an articulated program at the elementary school, middle school, and senior high school levels. The Advanced Studies Program is designed to expand student assessment and identification and to offer a differentiated instructional program. Gifted learners perform at remarkably high levels when assessed in comparison with others of their age/grade peers. Highly able learners should receive careful attention and differentiated program planning to ensure that their knowledge and skills are extended. Exceedingly high numbers of gifted and potentially gifted students in the District have resulted in a critical need to expand options for appropriate instructional programs to match their levels of learning.

Counseling and Guidance Outcomes 
The guidance/counseling process is a product of the collaborative efforts of teachers, administrators, support personnel, specialists, and parents. Everyone who lives or works with the gifted child often serves one or more functions in the guidance/counseling program for maximal effectiveness.

These functions may include: mentor, facilitator, listener, advocate, consultant, instructor, role model, and program coordinator. The guidance/counseling services will be differentiated for the gifted student to include:
    • Orientation of individual gifts and talents to special programs/services
    •    Information services about giftedness, summer and extra curricular
enrichment, scholastic services/scholarships
    • Placement in program options and educational alternatives
Transportation services are not provided. Parents are expected to provide transportation.
Eligible students going into 9th, 10th or 11th grade who reside within the LAUSD boundaries may apply. A transfer application will be available at the school of residence and it is submitted directly to the school of choice. Acceptance is based on student eligibility criteria and availability of space.
The School for Advanced Studies (SAS) Program offers an intensive academic articulated program in which both innovative and traditional courses are taught. The course content is modified to match the students' achievement level or capacity for learning.
Each student must be verified by the school of attendance as meeting one of the following three criteria: 
(1) Demonstrate ability in all four critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in
      their primary language.
  •   Explain meanings or relationships among facts, information, or concepts that demonstrate depth and complexity.
  • Formulate new ideas or solutions and elaborate on the information.
  • Use alternative methods in approaching new or unfamiliar mathematical problems.
  • Use extensive vocabulary easily and accurately to express creative ideas.
(2) Percentile scores of 85 or above in both total reading and total mathematics on
      standardized norm-reference tests or Scaled scores on the California
      Standards Test (CST) as follows:
 • A scaled score of 445 or above in English-Language Arts, grades 2-11 and
 • A scaled score of 450 or above in mathematics, grades 2-7 or
 • A scaled score of 450 or above for grades 8 and above in one of the following math content courses: Algebra I or II; Geometry; Integrated Math I, II or III; High School Summative Math.

(3) Identification as gifted in any of the categories (i.e. Intellectual, High Achievement, Specific Academic) by an LAUSD school psychologist.
